Welcome to our Primal Kitchen Mayo review!

In the process of reviewing Primal Kitchen as a whole, we found plenty of opportunities for further investigation into the leading condiment brand’s keto-friendly sauces, dips, and other products.

Both the regular and pesto mayo—each made with avocado oil—were among the first Primal Kitchen products we sampled, and they have since stood out as two of our most liked products.

But it wasn’t just our taste buds making this determination; Primal Kitchen Mayo earns an overall grade of A for its industry-leading ingredient list, adaptability to different diets (keto, paleo, etc.) and more.

We recommend Primal Kitchen Mayo to anyone looking for a clean and keto-friendly mayo that makes zero sacrifices on taste or nutritional impact.

Ingredient and Nutritional Quality

Grade: A+

Clean and organic ingredients, unsaturated fats, and zero added sugar, soy, or preservatives leaves us no room for deduction in the ingredient department.

Here is the complete, verbatim ingredient list for Primal Kitchen Mayo:

Avocado Oil, Organic Eggs, Organic Egg Yolks, Organic Vinegar, Sea Salt, Organic Rosemary Extract.

The loss of the vegan vote here (on account of the eggs) is redeemed by a nutritionally dense powerhouse of an ingredient list that includes complete proteins (again, eggs) and the healthy unsaturated fat of the avocado.

Between these two ingredients alone are delivered a host of supporting micronutrients as well, including Vitamin B, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, magnesium, iodine, choline, and much more.

This 100% clean ingredient list also receives the maximum amount of credit for staying away from additives, including added sugar.

As long as you appreciate the context—i.e., as long as you are following a keto diet and/or using portion control to prepare your body for a high-fat and high-calorie product—then there simply is no complaint that we can fairly lodge against this ingredient list.

Rest assured, we’ll continue to watch this ingredient list and others in the future to hold Primal Kitchen to the high standard of ingredient quality they’ve set for themselves, but in this case, it’s a definitive A+ for ingredient quality in our Primal Kitchen Mayo review.

User Experience

Grade: A+

From clicking the buy button to finishing the last of the product, we only had positive experiences with Primal Kitchen Mayo, including customer service interactions.

Primal Kitchen Mayo with Avocado Oil comes in a glass jar with a threaded lid (or a squeeze bottle, but we ordered the glass jar).

Our Primal Kitchen Mayonnaise arrived undamaged, and neither the container nor the lid gave us any major issues throughout our use of the product.

The texture seems very similar to standard mayo when scooping from the jar, but we noticed it feels more oily when you’re actually consuming it, which makes it a little easier to spread without globs everywhere.

Though we may be biased for our love of avocado (and pesto, in the case of the pesto mayo), we honestly prefer the taste of this Primal Kitchen Mayo over standard grocery store alternatives—it was smoother and had less of that pungent tang known to standard mayo.

The process of acquiring the taste admittedly took 2-3 servings, but once the taste buds realized this isn’t the grocery store stuff, we were very much hooked, spreading it on conventionally keto-friendly foods as well as non-keto foods like crackers, bread, and chips.

Our overall experience with the product was an overwhelmingly positive one, from receiving and using the jars to the taste itself, so we credit Primal Kitchen with an A+ for user experience in our Primal Kitchen Mayo review.

Brand Experience

Grade: A

Primal Kitchen earns high marks here for the availability of customer service channels (email, phone, and chat) and their fairly flexible shipping and return policies, but they did lose a bit for not covering return shipping costs or lost, damaged, stolen packages.

Since we award credit for this category based on the customer service experience, shipping and return policies, and our direct interactions with brand personnel, we’ll echo our comments from the Primal Kitchen review.

We give Primal Kitchen an A for brand experience for the following reasons:

  • They provide email, phone, and live messenger support
  • Every response we received from support was quick, friendly, and accommodating
  • They offer free shipping at $50 or more ($25 for subscribers) and expedited shipping options.

We wouldn’t have applied a deduction to the brand experience score solely because Primal Kitchen doesn’t pay for return shipping, but because they also don’t (explicitly) offer protection for lost, stolen, or damaged packages, we’re calling it out and knocking them down from an A+ to an A in our Primal Kitchen Mayo review.

Overall, both our personal experiences with Primal Kitchen team members and their generally pro-consumer approach to shipping, return, and other policies are befitting of a top-tier brand.

Grade: B+

It’s not going to compete with standard grocery store mayo on price alone, but the keto-friendly quality of Primal Kitchen Mayo makes a solid defense for its steeper price tag.

As with most of their other products, Primal Kitchen’s mayos don’t win the race to the bottom price-wise, but you won’t see any soybean oil, added sugar, or preservatives either (like many competitors who shall not be named).

Hence, we’re tasked with balancing the bump in price with the bump in quality.

A 24-ounce container of Primal Kitchen Mayo retails on their site for $16.99, which reduces to just under $0.71/oz.

Most high-end competitors sporting similarly clean ingredient lists—whether keto-optimized or not—are priced between $0.70-$0.80 per ounce, so no major red flags so far.

The most popular grocery store brands like Hellmann’s and Kraft Miracle Whip hover around the $0.35/oz range, which is right around half the price of Primal Kitchen Mayo.

While we are not at all hesitant to agree that the Primal Kitchen Mayo is at least twice as valuable in terms of quality than (other) grocery store options, willingness to pay more doesn’t scale infinitely with increased quality—everyone has a ceiling on mayo, and $16.99 for 24oz peaks through this ceiling a bit.

Considering the redeeming factors of undeniable ingredient quality and superb taste, we’re leaving it at a B+ for value in our Primal Kitchen mayo review with the understanding that the perceived value will go up or down in direct proportion to your commitment to clean and/or keto dieting.

Our Verdict

Primal Kitchen Mayo boasts a 100% clean ingredient list filled with healthy fats, proteins, and micronutrients, all while remaining keto and paleo friendly.

Both relating to this purchase and every other interaction we’ve had with Primal Kitchen, the brand experience remained top-tier, thanks to prompt and accommodating customer service, user-friendly packaging and labeling, and more.

Both the standard Primal Kitchen Mayo and their Pesto Mayo taste excellent, and can be used on a large variety of foods.

The price is too prohibitive for an impulse buy or for those on a smaller grocery budget, but for committed keto and/or clean-eating people, the value is undeniable.

For these reasons, we give Primal Kitchen Mayo an overall grade of A, and will recommend this product to anyone looking for an alternative to standard mayo.
