7 Best Hair Vitamins for Men

SHARE

If you notice your hair thinning a bit, it doesn’t necessarily mean you will inevitably go bald—or that hair vitamins and supplements will help, for that matter.

As we cover in this article on nutrition and hair growth, some forms of hair loss are temporary, reversible, and/or not mediated by processes that nutrition can affect.

That said, several key nutrients can in fact significantly improve balding in men with male-pattern baldness, such as vitamin D (and the rest of the letter vitamins), zinc, selenium, iron, and more.

There’s also a wide variety of amino acids and plant-based compounds that can address male-pattern baldness.

There’s our crash course—now for the list.

In this guide, we’ll show you the seven best hair vitamins for men’s hair loss, focusing on easy-to-use oils and conditioners you can work into your hair care routine and forget about.

Best for: Men experiencing early-stage balding and/or thinning who want to increase volume with a broad range of pro-hair-growth nutrients.

It’s certainly not a light read, considering the dozens of fancifully named plant extracts and nutrients in Jason Thin to Thick Extra Volume Conditioner, but we’ll feature several of the most effective hair-strengthening nutrients here:

  • Organic Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice
  • Organic Laminaria Digitata Extract
  • Chenopodium Quinoa Seed
  • Panax Gingseng Root Extract
  • Biotin
  • Tocopherol (Vitamin E)

As mentioned, while this product is free of parabens and phthalates, it does contain an emulsifier that has been shown to cause skin irritation at concentrations of around 10-15%—polysorbate 60.

Still, given the low incidence of issues in the realm of skin and haircare products, and the fact that Jason Thin to Thick Extra Volume Conditioner is free of parabens and phthalates, we consider it to be one of the safest and most well-rounded hair growth vitamins for men’s hair loss.

Best for: Men looking to strengthen and nourish hair (argan oil also helps with frizz) while also promoting scalp health.

One of the most well-rounded hair growth supplements for men, Derma E Thickening Conditioner delivers several key benefits, hair loss or otherwise.

For example, argan oil and biotin hydrate and strengthen hair. Argan oil is like a super moisturizer for your hair, preventing frizz, breakage, and other issues associated with dryness along with scalp health. Biotin reinforces keratin, the protein that gives structure to hair (and skin and nails), allowing for stronger and more voluminous hair.

Next, the peppermint oil and willow bark enhance scalp health by increasing circulation and follicle depth, exfoliating the scalp, and soothing irritation.

Finally, Derma E Thickening Conditioner contains several other plant-based compounds, like chamomile flower extract and coconut oil, to enhance these benefits without questionable preservatives.

As always, organic ingredients are preferred, but as the most affordable product on this list, Derma E Thickening Conditioner packs a ton of value into a clean product.

Best for: Those looking for a certified organic skin and hair care product that can soften and moisturize hair while repairing damage.

On the one hand, we generally prefer a broad spectrum of plant-based extracts when it comes to hair supplements for men, but on the other hand, NOW Solutions Organic Jojoba Oil is definitely a workhorse in the hair and skincare departments.

Jojoba is uniquely suited for hair (and skin) care thanks to its naturally occurring vitamin B12 and E content, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, copper, and many other compounds.

Along with these compounds come many antioxidants, which are compounds that can fight the effects of various forms of (oxidative) stress.

But even with a single-ingredient product such as this, not all jojoba oil supplements are created equal.

NOW Solutions Organic Jojoba Oil models the difference between a high-quality hair supplement and an underwhelming option with expeller-pressed, paraben-free, USDA Organic jojoba oil.

Best for: Anyone looking for the cleanest possible hair supplement that combines the hair- and scalp-nourishing benefits of jojoba oil with an essential oil blend.

If you’re the type of person to outright avoid additives at all costs, Mountain Rose Herbs Invigorating Hair Oil is as clean as it gets.

Here’s the entire ingredient list:

Organic jojoba oil, organic rosemary essential oil, organic lavender essential oil, and organic basil essential oil.

We’ve already covered the benefits of jojoba oil for scalp, hair, and more, and the addition of rosemary, lavender, and basil help to stimulate healthy hair growth, nourish and condition the hair follicles, and more.

On a broader note, we reveal in our Mountain Rose Herbs review (which entailed conversations with the MRH team and plenty of sampling) that this well-tenured herbal product company was the first to have an in-house lab where they test the purity and potency of ingredients.

Mountain Rose Herbs also holds an extensive list of certifications—put simply, they’ve put in their dues and then some, so we trust their Invigorating Hair Oil to do its job.

Best for: Men and women with androgenetic alopecia looking to slow hair shedding and/or promote hair growth.

It may set off “sketchy ingredient” alarms to the well-intending layman, but minoxidil is a totally safe (and very clutch) vasodilator that has powerful applications both for hair loss patients and those with hypertension.

Backing up a tad, vasodilators are natural or synthetic compounds that widen blood vessels, allowing more blood to circulate with less pressure on said blood vessels.

In the androgenetic alopecia scenario, minoxidil is usually applied topically to both slow hair loss and enhance hair regrowth with a lower incidence of skin irritation and other side effects than many popular hair supplements on the market.

We prefer Elevate Hair Growth Oil specifically because of the added biotin, ginseng extracts, and natural oils, all without toxic additives and/or parabens.

The major downside with minoxidil is that you will likely need to take the product indefinitely (if your particular case of balding is chronic/ongoing), but once you make it a habit, Elevate Hair Growth Oil can actually reverse balding for good.

Best for: Those looking for a clean and easy-to-use capsule supplement that promotes healthy and thick hair alongside skin health, energy production, and much more.

It popped on the scene pretty hard, and though the new car smell has partially worn off, biotin has survived as a popular supplement for several key reasons.

First, this water-soluble vitamin plays dozens of key roles in fatty acid production, metabolism, protein synthesis, and more, which translates to improvements in hair growth, skin care, and nail health, among many other benefits.

It’s well tolerated, affordable, and in the case of NOW Biotin 5,000 mcg, is produced under GMP-rated (Good Manufacturing Practices) standards.

Other reasons we trust NOW Foods, in addition to their almost-50-year history, include their in-house and ISO-accredited testing laboratories, expansive certification list (see the review), and leading vendor accountability standards.

As for the ingredient list, NOW Biotin keeps it simple with Biotin (5,000mcg/16,667% DV), Rice Flour, Hypromellose, Stearic Acid, and Silicon Dioxide.

If you’re maxed out on drops and gels, and just need a simple supplement for hair health and more, NOW Biotin delivers an affordable and reliable solution.

Best for: Men looking for a shampoo/conditioner combo that is both gentle on all kinds of hair and loaded with natural extracts to help with volume, strength, and more.

It will require men to profane the sacred institution of the fifteen-things-in-one bottle (shampoo, conditioner, engine degreaser, etc.), but if you’re willing to expand your hair care world by just one more bottle, the Cypress and Citrus Hair Care Kit by Dr. Squatch talks a pretty big game when it comes to plant-based ingredients.

Their ads might be a bit goofy, but turn that bottle around, and you’ll find a pretty impressive ingredient list, featuring the following ingredients (incorporating both products):

  • Rosemary Leaf Extract
  • Horsetail Extract
  • Cypress Oil
  • Tea Tree Leaf Oil
  • Shea Butter
  • Jojoba Seed Oil
  • Oat Protein

This is around half the natural extracts included between the shampoo and conditioner, and as for what isn’t there, you don’t have to worry about sketchy ingredients. The Dr. Squatch Cypress and Citrus Hair Care Kit is free of sulfates, parabens, and harsh chemicals.

Dr. Squatch products are consistently well-reviewed on Amazon, earning an average of 4.6/5 stars from 7,600+ reviewers and counting, but some do complain that the bottles are a bit smaller than they appear on the website.

And though you might fork over a bit extra for this combo then your all-in-one bottle, the laundry list of natural extracts speaks to a gentle and effective product for hair growth and/or maintenance.

Hair Vitamins for Men FAQ

Should men take hair vitamins?

Not all instances of hair loss are caused or affected by vitamin and mineral intake.

For example, traction alopecia is a generally reversible form of balding that results from prolonged pulling and/or twisting of the hair roots, which is more readily treated by removing the source of the (physical) stress.

However, in the highly common instance of androgenetic alopecia, supplements for hair growth are frequently used to slow or even reverse the associated hair loss.

Do hair supplements work for men?

As always, it depends on the formulation and ingredient quality of the supplement you’re taking.

As mentioned above, some forms of hair loss are not related to (or helped by) vitamin intake, but with male-pattern baldness, high-quality supplements are very often successful in treating the issue.

You may not experience hair regrowth, depending on the circumstances, but it’s likely you can dramatically slow or fully halt hair loss with a high-quality hair supplement.

Does biotin affect testosterone?

The link between biotin and testosterone levels is still being explored, but at this point, researchers are suggesting that there is in fact a positive association between biotin and serum testosterone.

For example, this study from Tohoku University in Japan found that cells from mice testis showed a “dose- and time-dependent” increase in testosterone production as a result of biotin treatment.
