It seems like no matter who you talk to, everyone has an opinion on tofu (and most aren’t great). Tofu has a reputation for being soggy, flavorless, and boring. This shredded BBQ tofu elevates an otherwise bland ingredient to a delicious, protein-packed main dish!
One of the great things about tofu is that it is like an edible sponge. Although it doesn’t bring a lot of its own flavor, it very easily absorbs any flavor you add to it, making it the perfect vessel for BBQ sauce.
Tofu has about 9 grams of protein per serving and is a great substitute if you’re trying to reduce your meat consumption or if you just want to try something new.
The shredding step in this recipe allows for even cooking and gives a texture reminiscent of pulled pork. Often tofu is diced or cooked in large shapes, leaving a crunchy exterior and gooey soft, flavorless interior. The shredding in this recipe, allows the entire piece of shredded tofu to get evenly cooked and coated with sauce and spices!
If you’ve been hesitant to pick up that tofu at the grocery store or just disappointed by countless attempts to make this protein taste good, we urge you to shred, shred, shred! You won’t eat tofu any other way. If BBQ sauce isn’t your thing, you could use teriyaki or even marinara to suit your preference. Enjoy!
Shredded BBQ Tofu Recipe
A meatless substitute for a meat-lovers favorite! Shredded BBQ tofu is a perfect way to get in plant-based protein. Add to tacos, bowls, and buns!
Spices to taste(salt, pepper, chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika)
⅔cupsBBQ sauce of choice
Instructions
Take tofu out of the package and wrap in a clean, dry towel. Place something heavy like cookbooks on top for 15 minutes. This is referred to as “pressing the tofu” and is a method used to draw out extra moisture as most packaged tofu comes submerged in liquid.
While the tofu is pressing, dice a yellow onion and set aside.
Once tofu has been pressed for 15 minutes, shred using a cheese grater.
Heat a large pan to low-medium heat and add 2 tbsp of avocado oil to the pan and heat
After 1-2 minutes, add in your diced onion and cook until translucent (about 3 minutes)
Add in the shredded tofu and spices
Stir until combined and mix sparingly, allowing the tofu to brown. Don’t overmix.
After 5-7 minutes, add in BBQ sauce and simmer for an additional 5 minutes
Optional: top with garnish (pickled red onion, cilantro)
Notes
We don’t recommend using tofu softer than firm as it will not shred as easily or hold up to the sauce as well as firm or extra firm.
