Homemade Broccoli Tots
Calling all snack fanatics! If you love traditional potato tater tots, these broccoli tots have the original beat.
These tots are cheesy, packed with broccoli, and easy to batch ahead of time. They are a great addition to an on-the-go lunch and make the perfect toddler snack.
There are plenty of nuggets and tots on the market (usually found in the frozen aisle) that are loaded with preservatives, sodium, and difficult-to-pronounce ingredients.
This recipe calls for just 4 ingredients (not including salt and pepper) and can be made in any shape you like. We like the classic tater tot shape but have also had success with little discs.
It can be challenging to find a new snack to please the ever-changing palette of a toddler (or big kid!). But these broccoli tots seem to strike time and time again with toddlers (we think the cheese has a lot to do with it).
Creating room for “healthy snacks” in your home shouldn’t mean bland-tasting, textureless, boring foods. These tots are great because they take an often overlooked veggie like broccoli and give it a little makeover. We find that the key to health-focused eating is finding ways to prepare nutrient-packed foods that don’t feel like a bore.
Broccoli is low in calories and has about 5 grams of fiber per 2 cups. We all know it’s a good-for-you veggie but most of us have a hard time getting adequate vegetables into our diets (let alone our children’s meals).
We hope these broccoli tater tots have you and the whole family asking for seconds.
Enjoy this healthy spin on a cafeteria favorite!
Broccoli Tots Recipe

Broccoli Tots
Ingredients
- 2 cups raw broccoli
- 1 cup shredded cheese (we use sharp cheddar)
- 1 egg
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- salt and pepper
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350℉
- Boil a medium-large saucepan of water until boiling.
- Wash and cut your broccoli (floret size is fine; we will fine chop the broccoli after it is steamed).
- Shred 1 cup of cheese (you can use pre-shredded cheese, however these often have more added preservatives to prevent caking than if you shred your own block of cheese).
- Add shredded cheese, breadcrumbs, egg, salt and pepper to a large mixing bowl.
- Once broccoli is soft (about 10-12 minutes) remove from saucepan and strain.
- Once cooled, transfer the broccoli to a cutting board and chop until fine.
- Add the chopped broccoli to a mixing bowl with other ingredients and mix well.
- Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Form your tots (or discs) and place on the prepared baking sheet. The mixture will be fairly sticky but will firm up once cooked. These won’t expand so they can be placed close together.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden.
- Serve warm on their own or with dip of choice.
