Instructions
Take tofu out of the package and wrap in a clean, dry towel. Place something heavy like cookbooks on top for 15 minutes. This is referred to as “pressing the tofu” and is a method used to draw out extra moisture as most packaged tofu comes submerged in liquid.
While the tofu is pressing, dice a yellow onion and set aside.
Once tofu has been pressed for 15 minutes, shred using a cheese grater.
Heat a large pan to low-medium heat and add 2 tbsp of avocado oil to the pan and heat
After 1-2 minutes, add in your diced onion and cook until translucent (about 3 minutes)
Add in the shredded tofu and spices
Stir until combined and mix sparingly, allowing the tofu to brown. Don’t overmix.
After 5-7 minutes, add in BBQ sauce and simmer for an additional 5 minutes
Optional: top with garnish (pickled red onion, cilantro)
Notes
We don’t recommend using tofu softer than firm as it will not shred as easily or hold up to the sauce as well as firm or extra firm.
