1. Best Overall Body Oil: Bio-Oil Skincare Oil (A+)

Best Overall Body Oil: Bio-Oil Skincare Oil (A+)

For anyone who’s ever searched for a solution to lightening their scars, Bio-Oil will be no stranger. This little bottle of magic oil is well-known for its ability to reduce the appearance of scarring, both deep and superficial.

As an avid user of Bio-Oil for treating scarring from acne, eczema rashes, and surgical scars, I can personally attest to its ability to soothe irritated skin and speed up the healing process.

But what gives Bio-Oil its magical healing powers? Well, there’s nothing mystical about it! Just good ‘ol science. In fact, the product information page lists 10 research studies carried out to determine Bio-Oil’s efficacy in healing scars, stretch marks, acne scars, and dry skin, as well as testing for its absorption, effects on sensitive skin, and comedogenicity.

The answer to what makes Bio-Oil so effective lies in its ingredients list (but you knew that!). Specifically, its inclusion of Vitamin A can help speed up skin cell renewal, heal the skin’s surface faster, and restore its normal structure.

Bio-Oil also contains oils such as jojoba, calendula, lavender, and dog rose oil, all well known for nourishing, soothing, and strengthening the skin barrier. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) also gives it a 2 for safety (a good score).

Finally, Bio-Oil isn’t prohibitively expensive—only $5.95 per Floz—compared to others (yes, even a few in this list), making scar healing more accessible to a wider range of consumers. We love that!

I did note that the oil is contained in a clear plastic bottle. Bio-Oil notes on its product information page that the product may change color if exposed to sunlight. As such, I recommend keeping it stored in your cabinet.

  • Pros
  • Promotes faster wound and scar healing
  • Cost-effective
  • Rehydrates dry extremely dry skin
  • Safe for sensitive skin
  • Non-comedogenic
  • Natural scent is pleasant but barely detectable
  • Cons
  • None!

2. Most Cost-Effective Body Oil: Neutrogena Light Sesame Body Oil (A-)

Most Cost-Effective Body Oil: Neutrogena Light Sesame Body Oil (A-)

While some body oil prices might be eye-watering, they certainly don’t have to be. At $1.34 per fluid ounce, Neutrogena’s Light Sesame Body Oil is among a few brands offering a less expensive oil that is as effective at nourishing skin.

This body oil, in particular, is a great option for those seeking a well-priced post-shower body oil that can kill multiple birds at once. This 2017 study found that sesame oil may reduce oxidative stress and relieve inflammatory pain in joints and wounds.

Additionally, this study indicates it may block out about 30% of UV rays. Please note that we do not advocate the use of sesame oil in place of actual sunscreen. However, it could be used underneath sunscreen and would not counteract its effects or increase the chances of sunburn.

The only cons to this body oil is that you may be missing out on the benefits of other body oils as a single type of oil. And, of course, if you’re allergic to sesame oil, don’t use this. Additionally, this product contains fragrance and propylparaben, which may irritate sensitive skin.

  • Pros
  • Great value for a body oil
  • Attractive, large bottle that will last a long time
  • Neutral, light scent
  • Easy to apply and soaks in once dry
  • Cons
  • Single-ingredient (you may be missing out on the benefits other types of oils can offer)
  • Contains fragrance and propylparaben

3. Best Dry Body Oil: Hume Supernatural Dry Body Oil (A+)

Best Dry Body Oil: Hume Supernatural Dry Body Oil (A+)

While many enjoy the benefits of body oil, some may avoid using it due to the greasy feeling of oil sitting on the skin until it soaks in. If this is you, you’re in luck.

While the phrase “dry body oil” may seem like an oxymoron, it does exist, and Hume’s Dry Body Oil Mist is among the best. With three different scents to choose from—including unscented—you have a wider range of options than other brands.

Hume uses a blend of Apricot Kernel Oil, Prickly Pear Oil, Coconut MCTs, and Olive Oil to nourish the skin without leaving a sticky residue.

The only “pink flag” ingredient is the fragrance, which may be irritating to some with extra sensitive skin. However, as mentioned above, they also offer an unscented version, making the ingredients 100% safe for almost all skin types.

  • Pros
  • Doesn’t leave sticky, greasy residue
  • Good price
  • Unscented version for sensitive skin
  • Mist bottle makes it easy to apply
  • Cons
  • The unscented version has a slightly less pleasant smell

4. Most Versatile Body Oil: Everyday Oil (A+)

Most Versatile Body Oil: Everyday Oil (A+)

While Everyday Oil is a body oil, it can actually do a whole lot more than other oils. In fact, after reading about it and using this product, I was left wondering, “What can’t this oil do?”

Besides being a super nourishing oil for the body, Everyday Oil can also be used on the hair, face, nails… well, pretty much everywhere externally. While this oil can’t pay my bills or walk the dog, I’m pretty satisfied with its multi-use components, including as a double cleanser.

Yup, you read that right. If you’re familiar with double cleansing, Everyday Oil can also be incorporated into your skincare routine before your usual cleanser to remove makeup or the daily grime that builds up after a day out and about.

I feel pretty safe using Everyday Oil for all of its advertised uses thanks to it’s third-party certifications for being organic, microbiome friendly (meaning it won’t upset the balance of the microbiome on our skin, face, or hair), and non-comedogenic. It also uses limited ingredients, including Organic Coconut, Jojoba, Olive, Castor, and Argan oil.

Lastly, I also appreciate the beautiful dark glass packaging. This not only elevates the experience of using the oil but also protects it from UV rays, which can oxidize or spoil it. The bottle also has a pump, which is more sanitary (preventing bacteria from getting inside) and less messy than other body oil formats.

So, if you’re looking to consolidate a few products into one—hair oil, nail oil, double cleanser, and body oil—this is the Holy Grail you’ve been searching for.

  • Pros
  • Can replace multiple skincare products
  • Minimal high-quality, all-natural ingredients
  • Unscented version for sensitive skin
  • Good value for quality
  • Cons
  • None!

5. Best Body Oil for Skin Aging: Osea Undaria Algae Body Oil (A+)

Best Body Oil for Skin Aging: Osea Undaria Algae Body Oil (A+)

For those seeking an indulgent body oil experience that also packs a punch in terms of skin aging benefits, the Undaria Algae™ Body Oil by Osea is one of the best options on this list.

This oil is infused with Undaria Algae™, a type of seaweed (more commonly known as wakame). It provides a blend of vitamins and minerals that nourish the skin, alongside the White Lupin flower, which firms the skin and improves elasticity.

While this body oil uses a blend of rich ingredients, it maintains a lightweight texture that absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy residue. The scent is not too overpowering, and if you’re worried it smells like seaweed, don’t worry. It doesn’t. Instead, when applied, it smells and feels more like a spa-like experience, elevating this body oil and making it a luxurious addition to your skincare routine.

One of my favorite things about this oil is not just how it feels on the skin and smells, but also Osea’s sustainability initiatives. Along with using renewable ingredients (seaweed grows back incredibly quickly), they are also Climate Neutral Certified and Ocean Positive Verified. These are two big steps this brand is taking to make a smaller impact on the environment.

Lastly, with Osea, we are beginning to edge into the more mid-range price territory of body oils on this list. This body oil comes in at $8.75 per fluid ounce, or $84 for one large bottle (9.6 Floz). It also comes in at $52 for its smaller format (5Floz). That can be a pretty penny to drop on a single beauty product, we know, but we can assure you that the ingredient quality and formulation here are worth it.

  • Pros
  • Great smell
  • High-quality, natural ingredients
  • Soaks in quickly, leaves skin super soft
  • Great for those with skin aging concerns
  • Great sustainability efforts
  • Cons
  • High price point for a single bottle

6. Best Body Oil for Travel: Eminence Yuzu Solid Body Oil (A+)

Best Body Oil for Travel: Eminence Yuzu Solid Body Oil (A+)

Traveling with liquid body oil can be precarious. Not only do you have to worry about it potentially leaking in your bag—wasting precious product and ruining your clothes—but if you’re traveling carry-on only, you may have to decant it into a smaller bottle, which can be messy and waste product, too.

With Eminence’s Yuzu Solid Body Oil, you can avoid these problems when traveling, making this our prime recommendation for a travel body oil. However, that’s not the only reason we’re calling out this amazing body oil.

Eminence offers one of the best body oil products with quality and sustainable ingredients. They use completely organic, biodynamic, sustainable, cruelty-free ingredients and are committed to being a “Green Company,” not just in name but by their many actions.

What’s actually in their body oil? You’ll find some awesome ingredients, such as Yuzu (obviously), an aromatic citrus high in antioxidants, along with Buriti Oil, Passionfruit Seed Oil, camu camu, and Polyhydroxy Acid (PHA), a gentle chemical exfoliant.

Not only does it have great ingredients, but this stuff smells fabulous and feels even better. Though it is reaching up there in price, a little goes a long way, so you won’t be running out of this too quickly.

  • Pros
  • Easy to travel with, no spills or leakage
  • Smells incredible
  • Brand is committed to sustainability at every step
  • Feels great on the skin
  • Cons
  • Medium price point

7. Best Botanical Body Oil: Nuxe Paris Body Oil (A)

Best Botanical Body Oil: Nuxe Paris Body Oil (A)

If you’re looking for a blend of beautiful-smelling botanical oils, the Nuxe Paris Body Oil will likely be your favorite skincare product you purchase this year.

With a blend of seven 100% botanical oils—Tsubaki Oil, Argan Oil, Macadamia Oil, Borage Oil, Camellia Oil, Hazelnut Oil, and Sweet Almond Oil— your skin won’t be missing out on any of the best benefits of body oil.

Together, these oils hydrate dry skin, improve your skin barrier, and increase elasticity.

Furthermore, you aren’t limited to using this only on your body. The Nuxe Paris Body Oil can also be used on your face and hair to improve its texture and appearance. Best of all, its scent is just faint enough to be pleasant but not overpowering.

  • Pros
  • Subtle, pleasant scent
  • All-natural botanical blend
  • Improves skin texture
  • Spray applicator
  • Cons
  • Medium price point
  • Contains fragrance

8. Best Body Oil for Sun Protection: “Vacation” Shimmer Oil SPF 30 (B-)

Best Body Oil for Sun Protection: “Vacation” Shimmer Oil SPF 30 (B-)

We graded this one pretty harshly due to a few issues with the packaging; however, we wanted to offer an option for those who love body oils but would like some UV protection.

As the product name suggests, we think this is a fabulous option for vacationers who want to add a bit of glitter and shine to their skin while still protecting it from sun damage.

In addition to the shimmer and shine from the gold-flecked mica, this oil also contains beneficial ingredients for your skin, including peptides, hyaluronic acid, argan oil, marula oil, coconut oil, and jojoba oil, as well as Vitamin E and bisabolol, which are beneficial for skin healing and hydration.

If you do not like to use chemical SPF, please be aware that this body oil contains avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate, and octocrylene as the active ingredients, another reason the grade for this product is a bit lower.

Since it has 30 SPF, keep in mind that you will need to reapply frequently or use an additional SPF underneath or on top of this product to extend the time between sunscreen applications.

  • Pros
  • Beautiful shimmer
  • Coconut scent
  • 30 SPF protection
  • Skin hydrating formula
  • Cons
  • Spray is hard to depress and dispenses inconsistently
  • Chemical SPF
  • Expensive for what it is

9. Best Body Oil for Dry Skin: Juara Candlenut Glow Body Oil (A+)

Best Body Oil for Dry Skin: Juara Candlenut Glow Body Oil (A+)

Uniquely dry skin requires an equally unique body moisturizer—enter the Juara Candlenut Glow Body Oil. This oil contains ingredients not typically found in other body oils, including:

  • Candlenut Oil: high in linoleic and linolenic acid to help heal rough skin
  • Passion Fruit Oil: high in vitamins and antioxidants that soothe and calm skin
  • Plumeria: non-greasy moisturizing ingredients
  • Moringa Oleifera: seals in moisture and antioxidant-rich
  • Turmeric Oil: brightens and reduces inflammation

This lightweight combination absorbs quickly, making it an excellent addition to post-shower rituals for those with extra-dry skin.

And I’m not just saying that! As someone with eczema who lives in an arid desert climate, I genuinely noticed a difference with this body oil and how soft it left my skin throughout the day.

Not only that, but the scent is pleasant (but not overpowering.) And though it contains fragrance, I noticed no flare-ups when using it.

While the price point is edging toward the higher end, the ingredients are of exceptionally high quality. As such, I believe it’s very much worth the value.

  • Pros
  • Unique formulation great for dry, chapped skin
  • Pleasant scent that’s not overpowering
  • Partners with MENTARI for positive social impact
  • High-quality ingredients
  • Cons
  • None

10. Best Body Oil to Use At Night: Osmia Night Oil (A)

Best Body Oil to Use At Night: Osmia Night Oil (A)

Few things are more satisfying than getting home at the end of the day, taking a nice warm shower, and sliding into clean, cozy sheets. But what if I told you that you could take that cozy sensation up to a 10, preparing your body and mind for an incredible night of sleep? If you enjoy soft skin and the scent of all-natural lavender, then the Osmia Night Oil is just the thing.

I have more to say about the brand itself, but firstly, let me tell you that this body oil uses a sensational blend of plant-powered ingredients. This includes:

  • Kukui oil: high in vitamins A, C, and E, which are all stellar for skin hydration, texture, and reducing discoloration
  • Borage oil: prevents water loss from the skin, locking in hydration
  • Chamomile oil: decreases redness and inflammation
  • Lavender essential oil: well known for reducing inflammation and anxiety relief

All (yes, all) of the ingredients in this oil are certified organic, which is a great value add and comforting to know since this is being applied to and absorbed by the skin.

Of course, the star ingredient here is the lavender essential oil, which is unmistakably present in this body oil. This is great for those who love the scent of lavender and find it calming and relaxing.

While I also appreciate lavender’s scent, I know too well that it can give me headaches. So, with how present it is in this product, I knew it would have been overwhelming to apply all over my body. If you’re the same, I recommend only applying this below the chest area so you don’t smell it all night.

That said, I am incredibly impressed with the brand as a whole and its commitment to using only the best ingredients with zero synthetic scents added! This is a plus for those of us with sensitive skin and people with sensitive noses.

Additionally, if you’re curious about the benefits of the ingredients in their products, their ingredients page includes nearly full-length articles about each one!

Overall, this is quite an impressive product and brand I would highly recommend for those looking to amp up their nightly routine.

  • Pros
  • Applies nicely and soaks in quickly
  • Very high-quality ingredients
  • Thoughtful formulation
  • Great ingredient transparency
  • Cons
  • Lavender scent may be overpowering for some

11. Most Sustainable Body Oil: Kora Organics Noni Glow Body Oil (A+)

Most Sustainable Body Oil: Kora Organics Noni Glow Body Oil (A+)

At first glance, this body oil doesn’t do a lot to differentiate itself from the ever-growing number of body oils available. However, this is one of my favorites on this list, purely because of the extra effort KORA Organics makes to source high-quality, fully organic ingredients and be fully sustainable

Yup, KORA Organics is Climate Neutral Certified, meaning it measures and offsets its carbon emissions and makes an effort to reduce them throughout the product production process.

As part of their efforts to use all organic ingredients, they partner with the Organic Farming Research Foundation, which fosters the improvement and adoption of organic farming systems.

As for the oil itself, it does exactly what it’s supposed to, without any weird additives, fragrances, or mumbo jumbo to confuse you about what you’re putting on your skin. We love a straightforward queen in the beauty world.

And where there is royalty, you can assume you will also find high prices, right? Well, there’s no beating around the bush here. This oil is expensive (about $19 per fluid ounce). However, we don’t hold it against KORA too much. It costs a lot to grow great ingredients and create body oil from them in a carbon-neutral process.

  • Pros
  • Transparent from top to bottom
  • Uber high, high-quality ingredients
  • Great sustainability efforts
  • Pump system is easy to use and dispenses oil evenly
  • Packaging feels high-quality
  • Cons
  • Expensive for most consumers

12. Most Sustainable Body Oil Runner-Up: Costa Brazil (A+)

Most Sustainable Body Oil Runner-Up: Costa Brazil (A+)

If I had to describe Costa Brazil in a few words, I’d say… quiet luxury meets unapologetically eco-friendly.

Costa Brazil goes above and beyond to create a luxurious body oil experience without negatively impacting an already overstressed ecosystem. This is thanks to their use of rare, premium ingredients derived from the Amazon basin, which are sustainably sourced by wild-harvesting (!) or from suppliers who use fair trade, sustainable practices and give back to their local communities.

Not only that, but Costa Brazil works with Conservation International, an organization that helps them find existing farmlands and offers opportunities to agricultural communities to grow eco-friendly, native crops instead of conflict crops (such as palm oil, sugar cane, or cattle).

This is one of the few brands I can genuinely say is going the extra mile to create a sustainable beauty product in an otherwise high-impact industry.

As for the products themselves, the Jungle Firming Oil and Sunlight Oil are both really outstanding from a consumer point of view. The bottles are made of heavy glass but have a silicone slip on the bottom to prevent the bottle from breaking if dropped. You might think this would make it feel cheap, but it absolutely does not. In my opinion, this just further elevates the experience, as this is a very thoughtful touch.

As for the oil, both products apply like a dream, absorb quickly, have a pleasant herbaceous smell, and leave the skin feeling nice and smooth. I will say that the application is a bit messy due to the restrictor cap lid (like the ones you would find on essential oil bottles) so the product dispenses a bit irregularly. That said, this does keep you from using too much and reduces the use of plastic in the packaging, so kudos there!

  • Pros
  • The definition of a sustainable brand
  • Great smelling and feeling oil
  • Extremely high-quality ingredients from the Amazon
  • Cons
  • Expensive
  • Application is a little messy

13. Best Body Oil for Skin Discoloration: Tronque Vitamin C Body Oil (A+)

Best Body Oil for Skin Discoloration: Tronque Vitamin C Body Oil (A+)

The Tronque Vitamin C Body Oil is one of the few body oils on this list with the primary ingredient being vitamin C, a powerful nutrient that can improve acne, discoloration, and texture, reduce inflammation, and may even help repair UV damage from the sun. You can read more about that in this article

With this in mind, it makes me wonder why more brands aren’t doing this! I mean, why not take the benefits of vitamin C that we get with our face skin care and apply them to our bodies, too? Tronque (pronounced trunk) really hits the mark with this innovation.

Before I get into the rest of the review, let me say that my only gripe is that one bottle of this bad boy costs $120. Yikes McGee! That is a lot of money to spend on a single skincare product for most people.

There is a lot of fancy language used to elevate their product offering, such as “bio-cleanical” formulations, patented ceramides, biotech lipid complex, and the inclusion of rare ingredients such as New Zealand red algae.

I’m not saying that Tronque’s ingredients and formulations aren’t all that, but it does lend a lot to consumer perception (and maybe overinflate it, too).

With that said, they do walk the walk when it comes to their vitamin C ingredient, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate.

This oil-soluble vitamin C purportedly has 50x stronger efficacy, absorbs deeper and more efficiently, and is very shelf-stable. As for it being more shelf-stable, this is especially important for vitamin C as a volatile ingredient that can lose effectiveness if not combined with the proper ratio of stabilizers like Ferulic Acid or Vitamin E.

Okay, moving on from the vitamin C to the fun parts. The bottle is freaking gorgeous and would look fabulous sitting amongst your skincare on your bathroom counter. The oil itself also feels and smells luxurious, and a little goes a long way.

Lastly, I love to see how committed Tronque is to using only the best ingredients that meet their “gauntlet” of requirements, including the following: effective, science-backed, results-driven, safe, sustainable, and indulgent. This aligns with everything we at The Nutrition Insider seek in every product we select for review!

  • Pros
  • High-quality vitamin C formulation
  • Improves skin texture, discoloration, and hydration
  • Smells great and fully absorbs into the skin
  • Beautiful bottle
  • Cons
  • Potentially overinflated price

The Nutrition Insider Methodology

Here at The Nutrition Insider, we utilize bespoke selection and testing criteria to help us find products that we believe are the best the market has to offer.

Some of these products are from our trusted brands, which we have reviewed in the past and can subsequently count on to offer high-quality products.

Others we’ve found in an extensive search using good old-fashioned search engine sleuthing, perusing internet forums, and consulting consumer reviews.

How We Determine Our Grades

For each product category, we utilize unique rubrics that contain product attributes graded on a 0-100 scale. This number is then turned into a letter grade, which we feel is a more quickly digestible metric for readers.

For the body oil product category, I based my grades on the following attributes we use in the rubric we formulated for beauty products: ingredient quality, efficacy, safety, skin sensitivity, sensory experience, packaging, transparency and labeling, accessibility, sustainability, and value.

Best Body Oils FAQs

Which oil is best for firming?

Oils alone cannot firm the skin, per se. However, some oils can help with hydration, improve skin appearance, and give it a firmer appearance. In this list, we recommend the Costa Brazil Jungle Firming Oil, specially formulated for this.

What oils improve skin texture?

Nearly all of the body oils in this list can improve skin texture when used consistently. If I had to choose just one from each price range, I would say BioOil, the Juara Candlenut Body Oil, and Tronque Vitamin C Body Oil are great options for improving skin texture by reducing scarring, discoloration, and inflammation.

What ingredients make your skin soft?

Naturally soft skin usually has a good balance of natural sebum that helps lock in moisture and keep skin looking soft and supple. However, many things can reduce this natural sebum production such as age, climate, and skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis. To offset this natural decline in oil production, oils like argan, jojoba, sweet almond oil, avocado, and rosehip oil can be used to rehydrate the skin, lock in moisture, and smooth the texture of dry skin. You can read more about the best types of oil for the skin here.

What oil penetrates the skin best?

Argan, jojoba, sweet almond, avocado, and rosehip oil can more deeply penetrate the skin than other oils due to their smaller molecular structure.
